Again we would like to thank the City of LA Cultural Affairs Department. Today we completed our 2010 grant, going to Avalon High School in Wilmington. Principal Ms. Gina Awtry, and the students are the greatest and most appreciative of audiences. Brittney Burrus, and Leticia Countes won harmonicas.

Thanks to the City of LA Cultural Affairs Department. Today we went to Youth Opportunities Unlimited High School. Principal Ms. Macintosh and the students learned a lot and were rockin’. Darius Bryant won a harmonica. New band member Lia Simone Braswell played her first gig on drums with Markus. Kudos.

Wow, what a great school Leonis High is! We were out in Woodland Hills where Principal Ms. Wendy Garcia, and Coordinator, Ms. Debbie Faerber led the students to participate at an extraordinary level. Giuliano Picasso played electric guitar on two songs, and David Saltzman took a 15-minute solo on drums. Cristian Ruvalcaba played acoustic guitar and sang his own composition, to the elation of his peers. Special shout-out to Deputy Ms. Lori Wheeler-Garcia from Supervisor Zev Yaraslavsky's office for her encouragement, and for J. R., Jaime Ortiz, and Auggie Rincon for road Manager/equipment duties!

Eagle Tree High in Carson is an awesome school. Principal Ms. Jackie Ayala and the staff should be very proud. William Pulemagafa sang and also won a harmonica, as did Ronnell Spencer, Darryl Dominguez, and Mayra Lima. Thank you Sidney Stern Memorial Trust for making this day possible.

Again thank you LA County Arts Commission. We want to give a shout out to Principal Lu De Sylva, and student-performer Erik Estrada, who along with the band, accompanied himself on 12-string guitar and sang an original composition. Student harmonica winners were Manny Morales, Luis Robledo, and Fernando Carasco. Kudos

August 7th was the Department of Cultural Affairs/Saturday Night Bath grant’s final event; what a day! Youth Opportunities Unlimited High School and Principal Ms. Macintosh were rockin’. Shakori won a harmonica and sang, as did Eriberto Maldonado. Other winners were Iran Martinez, and José Branila. They returned 50 questionnaires that day. Kudos.

Jasmin Jennings won a harmonica, and special thanks to roadies Eriberto Maldonado, and José Brambila. Eriberto is planning to enroll in the Harbor College Music Department... good luck!

The final LA County Arts Commission Grant–sponsored event was for the the young ladies and soon-to-be-babies at Ramona High. Everyone learned so much and was so attentive for 90-minutes, kudos.

Principal Ms. Jackie Ayala & Eagle Tree High rock! Saturday Night Bath thanks the LA County Arts Commission. Rapper Jesus Sanchez, budding harmonica player Jeannetta Polite, Michael Moreno, and Simone Kimble won Harmonicas.

One more "thank-you" must be given to the Department of Cultural Affairs. The concert at Kirk Douglas was an extraordinary one. Marlon Galario played incredible drumbeats and Gary Garland on was a “natural” on harmonica at blues. They both played incredibly well with the band and became celebrities. With Principal Connie Dunn’s help, Gabriel Cordero and Brianna Rushing plan to enroll at CSUN’s music department in the spring on guitar and congas, respectively. Nikko Estrada sang “Summertime”, Gary, Luigi Estuye and Giovanni won harmonicas.

Thanks to the Swanton Foundation, the concert and clinic at Stoney Point High School was a huge success. Gilbert Sanchez and Sergio Padilla played bass, Hector Costa and Sergio played drums, and Fabiola Armenta and Principal Padgett sang the Doors' "Break On Through". Ann Bailey, Danielle Salmas and Karlyn won harmonicas. Special thanks to our sign-turners and teacher-road crew... you're an awesome school.

Eagle Tree High in Carson is a great school. Principal Jackie Ayala says that they are her best class. During the Saturday Night Bath event, Ann Bailey won a harmonica and had extraordinary memory and listening skills. Desire Flores and Justine Jones were excellent sign-turners. Gilbert and Hector showed much ability, playing bass and drums, respectively. We hope they will enroll at Harbor College.

The sixth and final DCA event was a return visit to Moneta High in Gardena. The students, teachers, and Principal Mr. Tony Morreale were so animated and involved, just as in past visits. Izea Williams, Malik Artou, Cyrus Reddix, and Andrea Bossier represented.

Another City of LA Cultural Affairs Department phenomenon occurred at Cooper High in San Pedro. Trinity, Jeanette Palomera, Karneisha Wilson, Richard Warlock, Keath Brown, Roxanne Ware, and Romar Hagan were all harmonica winners. Thanks Lisa for tight sign duties!

Wow, what a happening occurred at Thoreau High today. Thank you LA County Arts Commission for your support! Brandon Anastascio, Amanda Weiss, and Sylvia Medina won harps. Brandon Palaelo, played guitar and Willie Gordon played drums with the band. Great job to dancers Abby and Sheri, and Roadie/gaffer Angel Torres.

Super-sharp students attend Avalon High School, including harmonica winners Laura Alvarez and Antonio Bazan. Special thanks go to our sign holders, and Emmanuel Diaz, Francisco Ayala, and Carlos, our road crew. Francisco took an extended drum lesson and received a Method book.

Highland Park High School was really sharp. Phillip Hadley, Richard Salazar, Peter Nuñez, Jane Lorenzo, Andrea Quesada, Miguel Morales, Benji Ramirez, and Teacher Mr. Upshaw all won harmonicas with their musical knowledge. Awesome job HP and Principal Ms. Iwamoto.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs has supported bringing our program to LA for 18 years, and Youth Opportunities Unlimited High School is a shining example of our success. Principal Mike Smalley, his staff, his 250 terrific students, and especially Ms. Shantae Weathers who won a harmonica, are an inspiration to us.
